Walk east across the bridge and follow the dirt lane to the Adamson House. Although Frederick Rindge was one of the wealthiest men in Los Angeles, his widow was perpetually land rich and cash poor. Nowhere are these tiles featured more extensively than at Adamson House. The house, designed by well-known architect Stiles Clements, was constructed in 1929 and first used by the Adamsons as a beach house beginning in 1930. They alternated use of the beach house with their home in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles until 1936, when the couple and their three children began living in the Malibu house year round.

This showplace of Malibu historical artifacts is a California Historical Landmark that is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The master bedroom, where Mr. and Mrs. Adamson slept, is on the southwest corner of the house. It has a large tiled bathroom, and Mrs. Adamson's clothes and hat collection remain in her closet. Next to the master bedroom is the one designed for the Adamsons' son; its bathroom has detailed tiles depicting ships and nautical scenes. The girls' bedroom in the center facing the ocean has a tremendous view of the ocean and coast.

In 1904, the Southern Pacific Railroad tried to change all that by building railroad tracks across the Malibu area, to link Santa Monica and Santa Barbara. Rindge wanted none of the Southern Pacific, and to thwart it, he incorporated his own railway line, the Hueneme, Malibu, and Port Los Angeles Railroad, to bring in supplies and ship out hides and grain. That, and the wording of California law, were enough to keep out the S.P.
